What is Operator Day?
Another KubeCon is just around the corner and, due to popular demand, we’re hosting Operator Day again! Designed for KubeCon, but free and open to all.
Last year, thousands of you joined us to get hands-on training from Ubuntu’s experts, so this time around we’re making the workshop even more elaborate and interactive!
Operators simplify everyday application management on Kubernetes. Learn how to use them, how to create them in Python, and how to evolve from configuration management to application management. We’re working to create a community-driven collection of operators for everything that’s integrated and tested everywhere.
What can I expect from Operator Day?
The sessions will repeat in 3 time zone friendly blocks, for Asia, EMEA and Americas. Each block starts with a keynote introduction with Mark Shuttleworth, then leads attendees through a hands-on training. Along the way we’ll dive into K8s, operators, Kubeflow, K8s at the Edge, and a variety of other topics. The session wraps up with community discussion on model-driven operations and the role of devs, ops, and SREs in cloud applications of the future.
KubeCon 2021 Operator Day session times
You can join at any time, but we recommend you pick the most convenient slot and follow it from start to finish so that you make the most out of each session.
- Asia: 14:00-18:00 CST (07:00 – 11:00 CEST)
- EMEA: 13:00-17:00 BST (14:00 – 18:00 CEST)

Opening Plenary
Operators, Models, Kubernetes, Hybrid Clouds, massive scale and bootstrapping quickly – Kubernetes is taking the the world by storm. So what’s next? Mark Shuttleworth (one time astronaut, founder of Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu) talks with David Booth (JetBrains, ZeroTurnaround, VP Cloud Native Applications) about the past and lays down a vision for the future.
Simplifying MLOps with model-driven operators
In early markets such as MLOps, solutions to parts of a large problem arise from multiple open source communities, startups and industry leaders. For the consumer, this entails one problem – integrating pieces of a software puzzle in a maintainable way. Model-driven operators promise a solution by connecting the ops of a single application with declarative integration in a standard that empowers providers.
Building a Charmed Operator
A guided tour of the Charmed Operator Framework illustrating the development of a simple Charmed Operator that targets Kubernetes.
Kubernetes at the edge: easy as Pi
Have you dreamt of having your own home cloud but found it too complex? Micro-clouds enable everyone to build a cloud anywhere. This session will cover LXD, MicroK8s, and Charmed Operators, and is BYOC (build your own cloud) so preheat your Raspberry Pi’s and get ready to follow along!
Community Session: Building a Model Driven Operations Manifesto
This session is for thought leaders and teams managing operations at scale. While K8s is driving a powerful shift towards a cloud native world, Developers, Operations, and SREs are solving important issues for the organisation. We’re moving from configuration management to application management. How can we solve the problems of the future while avoiding the traps of the past?
Make sure to RSVP in good time to secure your spot!
